NICT Open House 2009

Updated: Jan 6, 2022

At NICT, I developed an automated online 3D modeling system that would scan and register 3D objects in an online process. Generated 3D models could be visualized and manipulated subsequently on either a PC display or gCubik - a handheld autostereoscopic display created in NICT by Roberto Lopez and Yoshida Shunsuke.

Objects were placed on a rotation platform and rotated in a horizontal plane while capturing a complete set of high resolution scans. 36 views corresponding to a full 360 degrees view of the object would be generated in approximately 10 min . Complete data processing and registration took less than 1 min.

The project belonged to a wider effort undertaken by NICT with the purpose of creating natural and realistic communication with people in remote places as if they were face to face. The project was entitled Ultra-Realistic Communication System (超臨場感通信システム) and conducted fundamental research in 3D image technologies, 3D sound technologies, multisensory interfaces and also developing more objective measurement/ evaluation technique of feeling “presence” by using brain image and psychophysics.

NICT Open House is also a good opportunity for families with children to join the exposition. My daughter was really thrilled to play with the demo objects and I was amazed how quickly the kids can adopt and interact with the new technologies (especially the robots).
