Science and Technology SnT 2019

Updated: Jul 2, 2020

Science and Technology are the drivers of change that enable societies to grow and develop. During the 24th to 28th of June, 2019 I had the opportunity to join SnT 2019 (Science and Technology conference) organised by CTBTO in Vienna. This was a unique opportunity to learn about CTBTO's sensor networks and processing methodologies used for the monitoring of nuclear explosions. A diverse source of remotely sensed data, whether from satellites, aircraft or remotely controlled measurement platforms, may find use in nuclear explosion monitoring.

CTBTO's verification capabilities can also contribute to sustainable social and economic development with civil and scientific benefits. As such, exploring the ways in which verification technologies and data collected by the International Monitoring System (IMS) can be paired with emerging tools (e.g. geospatial imagery, machine learning, data visualization) can help pave the way to potentially high impact outcomes for a sustainable development.

On the sidelines of the conference, I joined a half-day Technical Visit to the Technology Support and Training Centre and learned about specific operations at the facility, such as testing of techniques and methods, storage and maintenance of equipment and training.
